Introduction:

Contemporary Chinese is a textbook designed for students whose native language is English. The ultimate goal of this book is to develop the student's ability to comprehend and communicate in the Chinese language. Specifically, it provides training in the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing Chinese.The whole series consists of four volumes.

Textbook (Vols. 1-4): This consists of text, vocabulary, notes, grammar, and cultural background. The texts, given in both simplified and unsimplified characters, also include pinyin and English translation.

The following are to be used together with the Textbook:

Teachers' Book (Vols. 1-4): The Teachers' Book explains in detail the entire structure of the series, and what is intended in each lesson. Here students will find reference material, texts for listening exercises, keys to the exercises, test papers, etc.

Character Book (Vols. 1-2): Includes relevant knowledge about Chinese characters, and various kinds of exercises.

Exercise Book (Vols. 1-4): These exercises are comprehensive, and varied in form, covering listening, speaking, reading and writing. Ranked from easy to difficult, the exercises are designed to meet the need of learners with different skill-levels.

Cassette tapes and videotapes are also available to accompany the textbooks.

After working through Volume One, students should have a good command of 325 Chinese words and expressions, 244 Chinese characters, 22 grammar items and 23 communicative function items, and thus have a basic command of Chinese.
