Asian movie fans across the world now recognize Zhang Yimou (House of Flying Daggers, Hero) as a great Chinese director, but few knows that he was once an award-winning actor. Before he made his directorial debut Red Sorghum, his performance as the male lead in Old Well (1987) actually won him Best Actor awards in the two most prestigious ceremonies, the Golden Rooster and the Hundred Flowers, and also in the 2nd Tokyo International Film Festival. Director Wu Tianming, though now less well known as Zhang Yimou now, was also famous for making quality Chinese films. Old Well also received the Tokyo Grand Prix - The Governor of Tokyo Award in the Tokyo International Film Festival in 1987.

The story is set in poor village in a mountain area where water becomes really scarce after all the wells have been dried up. A young man Sun Wangquan (Zhang Yimou) returns to the village from the city, and is determined to dig a new well. He gives up everything he has, and even let go of his beloved woman, just to complete this mission... Beneath the calmness or even indifference on surface, the film actually contains a forceful undercurrent that will surely move the audience.
