Description:

Widely regarded as one of the greatest Japanese movies of all time, Kenji Mizoguchi's Tales Of Ugetsu is a cautionary tale about the pursuit of fame and fortune. Set during the civil wars of 16th Century Japan, the story follows two happily married, but penniless peasants, Genjuro (Mori Masayuki) and his brother-in-law Tobei (Ozawa Eitaro), who inadvertently destroy their families in their quest for greater happiness.

Genjuro dreams of becoming a master potter, of selling his creations in the big city and making his fortune. Tobei, on the other hand, yearns to become a masterful and heroic samurai. Blinded by their desires for wealth and recognition, the two men recklessly abandon their loving, dutiful wives and in the process bring nothing but suffering and tragedy to all concerned.

This classic drama, originally released in 1953, was one of a small number of films (that includes Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon) that helped introduce Japanese Cinema to Western audiences. Mizoguchi has been regarded as one of the greatest directors of women ever to have worked in Cinema, and Tales Of Ugetsu is a perfect showcase for his incomparable talents.
